Hi Scotty,
Love your show. My friend has a 2008 Honda Pilot with 3.5 L V6 and ~103,000 miles. He went on a long road trip from DC to Cincinnati. On the way back, he was driving on the highway in the mountains at 70-80 mph, and the engine started knocking loudly and lost power. No Check Engine Light. He had it towed to a garage. They say the noise is coming from the bottom of the engine. They checked the top and said nothing was wrong. To diagnose, they want to pull the oil pan. What do you think it is?
Although they haven't said what the problem is, they say he will almost certainly need to replace the engine for $11K (cost for a totally new engine). Earlier in the same trip, the Check Engine light came on with catalytic converter code. He also found that the the engine oil was low. He added a quart of oil. The light when off and engine was running fine until the knocking. He also said he kept checking the oil level after adding the quart and it was fine.
Thanks so much.

The engine was low on oil which resulted in the knocking. When the engine oil light came on, why did he add only 1 quarter?
No engine oil light. He had just checked the oil level after the first check engine light to make sure nothing else was wrong. Now he tells me (of course, after I posted this) that the engine light did come back on when knocking started along with the VTM-4 light came on. But he tells me he checked the oil level after this incident and the oil level was fine. Thanks so much.
If the level was fine and the light came on, the oil pressure was low. Odds are that the oil pump was bad. To avoid the engine issue, he should not have driven it. For the next step, he could look into junkyards to find a good used engine.
