2010 hyundai elantra-do I need a new transmission

I have a 2010 hyundai elantra with 114500 miles that I have had less than a year but the previous owner didn't do any maintenance besides oil changes. My transmission fluid is very dark and smells bad so I haven't changed the fluid. When I drive it often jolts into gear in town and sometimes doesn't shift to the next gear until my RPMs are really high or i push the gas pedal and the rpms go up but no speed for a few seconds when I'm on the freeway.

my job requires me to drive up to 50 miles a day so i have had to become somewhat of a diy mechanic with just google and the shop manual to my car, your videos have helped me tremendously but transmission repair requires tools i dont have. i was wondering how long do you think I have before I will need a new one? what are the like worst symptoms to watch for? Is it worth putting a new one in?

Ouch!  Sure wish dealers would recommend fluid changes.

Sounds like you have little to lose by changing the fluid.

But, be prepared for the possibility it won't run at all afterwards.

Need someone with more expertise to answer on whether or not it's worth repairing.

Never to late to change the transmission fluid. Never flush a transmission or motor, do a drain and fill. If it’s still dirty, do it another 1-2 times with some driving in between.

You shouldn’t need a new transmission unless it’s slipping or jerking the entire car when it shifts.
