Well maintained 2010 Santa Fe GL V6 (mostly at dealer till recently), around 240,000 KMs (150,000 miles), hoping to get one more year, maybe two, of use out of it after spending a bit of money on a couple of major systems in the last two years. About a week after a recent oil change, oil pressure warning light started to flicker at idle. Googled the problem and a number of posts I found mentioned the oil pressure switch as a possible culprit. Took it back to repair shop and they gave the same diagnosis so gave them the go-ahead to replace it. The switch is an inexpensive part, but apparently located in a difficult spot on my vehicle, so got charged almost three hours of labor to replace including cost of gaskets for manifold which had to be removed to replace switch. When the job was finished was told that it did not resolve the problem. Oil pressure warning light still flickers at idle. Was told by repair shop that the other possible cause would involve a very expensive fix almost requiring a rebuild of the engine. Guess I should have done more Googling ❓ . Angry at shop because they should have revealed the other possible cause of oil pressure problem upfront and given me the option of not bothering to replace the oil pressure switch and just live with the problem, since that is what I am going to have to do now anyway (trying not to pump big amounts of money into vehicle at this point).
Finally, my question(s) - How long will the vehicle last with this problem? If I avoid driving it a lot in heavy traffic where I spend a lot of time at idle, will this avoid a catastrophic failure, or at least delay it for awhile? Is there anything simple I can do to try to ameliorate it, e.g. put extra oil in the engine? Is there anything in the oil pan that could be a cause? The tech at the shop kept asking if I had had it replaced as if that potentially had something to do with the problem but wouldn't elaborate any further. My recollection is that I might have had an new gasket put on the pan some time ago by the dealer.
If you have enough oil in the engine, you may have faulty oil pump. You should measure the oil pressure.
regarding your question: driving with oil light on, if you don’t have enough oil or oil pressure inside the engine, will ruin your engine and possible lock up, so it is not safe.
