My dad gave me his 2011 Ford Escape. It’s just shy of 213k miles, has the straight 4 front wheel drive with an automatic trans. The front driver’s side wheel has play right to left. It makes a metal thud sound that I think is coming from the outer cv joint, and the cv axle has some play when I push on it. Could it just be the tie rod and/or bushings or does the cv axle likely need replacing?

That's hard to say. You'd need to either get it up in the air or crawl under it and see what kind of shape the axle boots are in, whether they are leaking grease everywhere or not.
If you aren't sure what to look for, get a mechanic to check it out. I would not delay getting it fixed as it could be something that isn't safe to drive with.
