[Solved] 2011 Jetta Cooling Fan Issue

Hello, I am hoping that you can help with this one.

I I'm having an issue with the cooling fan on my 2011 Jetta SE 2.5L.

With the AC off and the coolant temp around 180-190 the radiator cooling fan doesn't turn on. Temp peaked at 205 before I shut the car off and still the fan didn't turn on. When I turn the AC on both fans turn right on. I originally though it might be the coolant temp sensor but I can get a temp reading from the OBDII scanner.

I'm not sure where to go next.

All the best,

UPDATE: Issue has been found and fixed! I noticed a spike on the temp log that went from 119-419F soon after I started the vehicle. Also the fans went into overdrive mode. I replaced the 2nd coolant temp sensor (the one that plugs into the radiator) and fixed the problem.

First, check all the fuses and relays in the fan circuit.  If that checks out, suspect your fan control module or the fans themselves.  If the fans come on when the ac is on but not when they are supposed to, my bet would be the control module is malfunctioning.  Rock Auto, Beck/Arnley #2030286 - $110.79

Fuses check out. Do you think the sensor on the radiator itself could be bad? I will check out that control module. Thank you for the sku!

Disconnet that fan and put power to the connector, if it runs you got a problem in the control system.

I disconnect the main plug for the fans. I run two wires straight from the battery to the fan and the fans turn right on. I check the plug from the harness and the bulb lights up on my power checker, (one lead in the plug lights up, the others do not). This is all with the car off.
