So we have a 2012 Nissan Maxima V6 3.5L. My wife was idling in a drive thru today waiting for coffee and she said there was a hissing sound. She said it got louder and higher progressively then stopped (she was worried it would explode) and she then also said the temp gauge went up slightly (maybe a hash/hash and a half at most). She said it then smelled hot.
Now recently we had an issue with the MAF sensor which was replaced and then the software updated to the ECM.
Could it be a vacuum leak or something possibly worse? It's got about 113k miles on it. I drove it tonight and I didn't notice it smelling hot, the temp gauge stayed just about/below halfway on the gauge, I didn't notice any missing hoses or leaks of liquid, and I also drove around without the heat on to see if I could smell a hot smell. I'm puzzled Scotty, can you lend your knowledge, brother?

A vaccum leak is the most likely culprit. I would say a clogged or crimped coolant hose is a possibility as it was starting to get hot, but if you couldn't replicate it then I doubt that's the issue.
I'd give it a good check to make sure everything is tight and nothing is dry rotted or cracking. When you are next to a wall like that, it can really amplify even a pinhole leak.
Honestly I thought it may have at least been a vacuum leak. I was at a speedway gas station last night and I took video on my phone while I had the hood up to try to see if I can at least hear some sort of sound and I thought I was hearing a vacuum leak but I wasn't sure as my ears don't work as good as they used to. However the sound was louder on the passenger side than the driver's side 🤷🏻♂️
If it’s not what @mod_man said, I’d start looking for snakes.
