Hey all,
I'm replacing my condenser and compressor. A mechanic told me that I should replace the expansion valve as well. However, there are 2. the front and rear....can I get away with just changing the front or do i really need to change out them at all? Would love your thoughts.
If the old compressor seized up it will have contaminated your AC system with metal debris that would likely be caught in the expansion valve(s). If that's the case and you have two expansion valves, replace them both.
Thank you for your response, my compressor is working but is weak. It has not seized, so are you saying that I do not really have to change out? thanks!
If there is any doubt at all it is best to replace both valves while the other work is being done. Even if not seized up, if your compressor is weak that implies wear and there could still be some debris floating around in there. Another reason to change both valves would be if sealer was ever introduced into that AC system. (Sealers are notorious for clogging expansion valves.)
