Engine stutters after 2nd gear

I have a 2012 Volkswagen Passat with the 2.5, 5 cylinder engine, with the automatic transmission, 130 thousand miles. About a year ago, I started having what feels like a misfire after about 10 minutes of driving. It has gotten very predictable in that when i drive it hard... it starts happening, I left off the gas and hit the gas again and it's gone. It doesn't happen in 1st or 2nd, but does in all the other gears, Happens more durring the summer than the winter. Happens less in the sports gear, also happens while manually shifting. Now if i drive it slow and gentle it doesn't happen. There hasn't been any codes, pending codes, or check engine lights and no other problems with the car, I'm thinking the transmission is going out, but wouldn't it trip a code? I'm not sure?

Please describe the specific symptoms. What are you actually hearing or feeling, or how does the vehicle behave?

It feels like an intermittent misfire or as if it was starving for fuel, the engine quickly stutters after 2nd gear, i let off the gas and hit the gas again and it corrects

as if it was starving for fuel

have you checked the fuel pressure?

this will require some basic troubleshooting.

  • Scan for codes.
  • If codes exist - address them.

  • Replace fuel filter

  • Check fuel pressure when priming
  • If it’s unusually low, replace fuel pump.

  • Check if the pressure begins to drop faster than 3 minutes
  • if so find what injector is leaning / inspect pressure regulator (if equipped)

  • Try to find vacuum leaks, Scotty’s method with starter fluid works wonders

  • disconnect the O2 sensors and see if it works better when the fuel system is in OL mode.
