Hey Scotty,
2012 Volkswagen Tiguan with 156,000 miles on it. Before you get on a VW rant, we bought it used for hauling our dogs around, and the Tiguan was the only one in its class that had the cargo room, specifically the height for our Great Dane. Hence, the car is a cheap beater-dog car which gets coated with dog hair and dander non stop.
The issue and concern revolves around the oil and type of oil. We were taking it to the VW dealer for oil changes. But in a matter of a few weeks after the oil change, the oil would disappear from the car. Every time. We refill it ourselves with Castrol Edge Euro car 5w-40 and have no issues with the car using oil afterward. I have never contacted the dealer to see what they are putting in the car but I would assume that they are putting in the lighter 5w-30 oil. How can a car be spec'd out for two different oils which is what my internet research says. And what kind of issues are looming based on what I told you about the oil. BTW - no oil is leaking out of the engine seals onto the driveway and no other issues to note for a car with that much mileage on it.
Depending on the ambient temperature and the load on the engine, some manufacturers have a range for the oil viscosity. Check your owner's manual to find out. About the oil leak, you should take care of itbor at least keep your eyes on it since it seems to be a big leak.
