2014 Camry a/c issue??

Hi,

Im having an issue with my a/c on my 2014 Camry (115 K) where iIt periodically blows cold air (as normal) and then warm air. My mechanic initially thought it needed a recharge, but ruled it out saying the compressor was going out and needed replaced. When I asked about the periodic cold to warm air, he said the pistons in the compressor were getting stuck as to not free the freon to flow properly.  I was looking on the internet and noticed some owners noted that they had the same issue and it turned out to be a faulty a/c compressor flow sensor which can be replaced without the compressor.  My questions are if that were the case, would it trip the engine light on for the code for it, B-1479? He didnt put it on the scanner to check. He didn't mention it leaking either.  Would he notice it leaking right away without doing a dye test? My brother had an issue in his 16 Camry last Summer with it not blowing out cold air and it turned out to be a faulty temperature control module in his case.  Any input would be greatly appreciated as its an expensive fix. That is not an emissions code so is not likely to trip the check engine light. In fact you probably need a professional-grade scan tool to read the code. Here is the shop manual's diagnostic procedure for that code:

It depends on whether a test was done at all for leakage. There are methods other than a dye test. (Of course some leakage would not be unusual in a 12-year-old vehicle.)

That is a complex computer-controlled system and proper diagnosis, rather than guessing, is imperative to effect repair.

 


Thanks for the input, if it were your vehicle, would you do an OBD scan to rule out its something beyond the compressor before going through the expense of replacing it?


That would not be a bad idea if you have a sufficiently advanced scan tool. However a generic consumer-grade OBD2 scanner is not likely to read HVAC codes.


I dont unfortunately. Outside of my mechanic, I would have to rely on Oreillys or Auto Zone. Not sure if the latter have professional grade scanners. Any input on the temperature control module? At the time my brother replaced, I seemed to to recall the dealer saying it was a common issue. Thanks again.


Can't say from here whether there's an issue with the temperature control module. Testing with a bidirectional scan tool would be needed to determine that. Also don't know if the auto parts store scanners are sufficiently advanced to read HVAC codes. Unfortunately the HVAC systems on modern cars are not very friendly for at home diagnosis unless the problem is something really obvious like a leak or noisy compressor.
