2014 Ford Escape - ATF leaking after change (around drive shaft)..

Ok so I did a ATF change on my transmission and it started leaking about 24 hours later.

Took it back into the mechanic thinking it was them putting the plug/screw back in incorrectly but they found the leak to be coming from the front end of the drive shaft.

I'm in Africa so the terminology may be a bit off, but I was told that there was a recall on these for the front and rear shaft "cones and seals". The tranny only leaks till it gets to about 3.5l and then it stops but obviously this is not ideal.

So...

a) does this sound accurate/realistic?

b) if so, can someone -please- tell me what part(s) they're actually talking about so I can order them in? Got someone heading this way early April..

Many thanks!

left and right driveshafts

FWD vehicles do not have drive shafts.. only axles.

Is this Escape FWD or AWD?

How bad is this leak?

This is the SE AWD 1.6l ecoboost.

The leak only happens after driving. Seems to slow/stop if unused for a while. The drip I see is every few seconds but that's going through the cover they put on the undercarriage so I'm not sure the actual "speed" of it. The mechanic claimed that once it got low enough to match the previous level that it would stop leaking..

and mileage?
it's fairly common to have seepage at the driveshaft because that area sees a lot of movement.
But if it's bad enough to drip then you may need a new seal there.

Sounds like somebody badly overfilled the trans with fluid.

If that's the case, do I just let the "excess drain" or is it still a parts replacement issue?

Once the seals are blown, they need to be replaced.  Necessitates removal of the trans, because usually, if the rear main trans seal is blown, the front one will be too, soon if not now.

Ok.. looked into the parts. I'm not sure if I'm looking for the "camshaft" seal or the "crankshaft" seal. I have moderate knowledge of cars but not that much.. so some clarification would be very helpful.

Those are engine seals. From your description it sounds like you need front and rear transmission seals.

Under Transmission, RockAuto lists output shaft seals. They're in left/right and fwd/awd options.. which is odd as I expected front/rear..

Since the front wheels are driven on the Escape there will be seals on the left and right driveshafts. If it has AWD then there will also be a seal on the rear driveshaft.

Six of one, half dozen of another. Some even refer to them as "halfshafts".

Good to know. Sadly with all this I'm still no closer to actually knowing which parts to order..

Can you please upload a photo/video of the parts or area that are leaking?

Sadly I cannot, my tools are on a ship (hopefully) halfway over the Atlantic..  (and there is an undercarriage cover to remove)
