2014 Ford Escape 160k miles automatic transaxle U3000 is the code that was read.

After doing some initial research the U3000 code deals with the power steering control module. My car periodically will upon startup show a power steering assist fault. I have been able to so far been able to turn the car off. Turn the car back on and the code goes away and my power steering returns. The dealership says that the steering gear assembly needs to be replaced. They quoted me at $2017 for the repair.

Is this something that I can expect to become more common upon startup? Will I be able to just turn the car off then back on as a fix? Is it something that needs to be fixed urgently? What are the possibilities if I don't get it fixed right away?

I have looked at replacing it myself and is it something that I could reasonably do? or should it be taken to a shop somewhere to be done?

Thanks for any help!

First off, check your vin with Ford corporate to verify that the recall was in fact already preformed... second good luck... this is the part I am trying to figure out... unfortunately for me, Ford already did recall "work" about 5 years ago with a previous owner....

As for the problem you are facing, I am having the exact issue... I have found that it more than likely is a bad torque sensor in the steering column... but.. I would like to use a tool such as forscan, although all I have is blue driver to try a see if the torque sensor is sending information and hence perhaps the issue is elsewhere...

@scottykilmer the vehicle is my wife's car, I personally am not a fan of SUVs and she will not drive it without power steering, I actually do need to fix it.

Going forwards it will break in the near future at some point in time.but what the heck if you can drive it without power steering doesn't hurt anything. And of course get price for replacing it at an independent shop is they would charge considerably less
