Poor acceleration

Topic starter

2014 Kia soul 161k miles with poor acceleration. I say it needs a cat converter. Dealer shop replaces plugs and coils. Same issue and car dies the next day requiring a tow. Second shop says the plugs were gapped wrong and had to replace them. Same issue except no dying. Third shop replaces cat converter 🤔 and now it runs like a scalded dog ! Your take?

(...) I say it needs a (...) shop replaces (...) replace (..) Third shop replaces (...)

Diagnose before just throwing parts at it!!!

Before replacing plugs, you check if the gap is too big and inspect their condition.

Before replacing coils, you check that there is a misfire.

Before replacing the cat, you remove the front O2 sensor and see if it runs better.

Check the air filter,

Clean the MAF / MAP, etc.

Test fuel pressure.

Test compression.

Scotty has quite a few videos on the topic.

runs like a scalded dog
What do you mean? is it just weak? is it misfiring? any particular noises?

@mmj Thanks! I didn't know that.
