My wife’s 2016 CX-5 AWD has 120k miles. The driveshaft to the rear (AWD shaft) is broken. The shop wants about $900 to replace it. I don’t think I need AWD anymore. Can I ask the shop to remove the driveshaft and just run the car as FWD? Is that OK? Will there be any problems since it’s originally AWD? Hurt the transmission?

It depends entirely on what type of AWD it uses (full time/part time, active/passive, mechanical, electronic, etc.), but usually the answer is no, these things don't like having an output missing. I don't know what this 2016 has (I don't have access to the technical specifications) , but maybe the shop does. Ask them.
FYI, in the future please put a concise description of your problem in the title, not your car. Thanks.
