[Solved] Auction car 2017 Toyota Corolla with codes

Hey Scotty,

Looking at a 2017 Corolla that's come up for sale at an auction that has "Pre Collision System Malfunction - visit your dealer" warning on the dash.  When I googled it, it seemed to be a recurring problem for a few different model Toyotas.  How much of a worry is this?  Should I bid on the car or avoid it?

That’s a red flag:  pass on it.  Also, it’s not a good idea to buy auction cars especially sight unseen without a test drive and a good, independent mechanic hooking up his dealer-level scan tool to make sure all the key parameters look good.  Much has been discussed about the cons of auction cars if you do a search on this forum.

Thanks for the responses everyone. I'll give it a pass. Too bad because it's an otherwise nice looking vehicle.

The ONLY thing I will say on this: I have seen this exact error on my 2020 Camry TRD. It happened immediately following windshield replacement. The glass tech forgot to hook up the wire for the pre-collision system. So if it has had a new windshield installed, that COULD be the issue. Once the wire was hooked back up, the error went away.

However, my car was not an auction vehicle and I had test driven it and inspected it earlier in the day before the windshield was replaced and found no issues, so it was obvious something happened during the process. With auction cars, you roll the dice without the ability to do any of that and I strongly side with everyone here telling you to avoid that vehicle. It may look great, but looks can be deceiving.

Yikes,  I would not even think about bidding on it. Who know what issues you will be jumping into.

There are too many things tied into this system automation. Are you ready to troubleshoot this electrical nightmare? Pass on this one
