Randomly when the car is out in park a warning light will come up saying to shift into park which is it.

Clicking the shifter will eventually get the code to go away.

Ideas?

There was a warranty repair for this from GM back in 17-18.  It should be a no cost repair even if the vehicle is out of warranty.  There was a bad shifter position indicator due to a supplier issue.  Contact your local GMC dealer.

Crappy gym quality I would assume the transmission module that tells what gear you're in on the transmission is breaking down

It sounds to me like a worn out switch in the gear selector.

I owned a 2017 Acadia, they had a re-design of the shifter latch and electrical sensor. The issue was in a certain vin sequence and was handled without a recall.
