I recently took your advise and bought a 2017 awd rav4 to replace an ecoboost ford escape. Today I had to have the dealer replace some wiring harnesses behind the dash because a mouse chewed through them, they also chewed up my cabin filter. I have read toyota switched to using soy based insulation on their wiring which could attract rodents. What can I use to deter them from my car? I live out in the country and field mice are common. Thanks.
I have personally used drier sheets and they work pretty well. Never tested but I’ve heard ivory soap works and of course the common moth balls but they smell awful. Just always be careful not to leave any food in the car or anything else that could lure them in
I suggest you get a cat and settle it near the car.
There is special rodent tape that has capsaicin pepper on it. Just google it, you can get from Amazon too. Wrap that around the plastic conduits that house your wiring. Rodents hate spicy pepper. Wear gloves when you apply it. Don’t touch you face. It would be like itching your eye after eating spicy hot buffalo wings.
I concur, … drier sheets! Works well. Also, never eat in your car. That works, as well.
There is also Scotty’s vid, … he talks about some ultrasound emitting device he used, … he claims it works. Just search for it.

Here’s a video Scotty made a few years back regarding this issue. It’s worth a try.
