Hi Scotty,

First time writing to you, 3-4yrs SUBSCRIBER.

Unfortunately my wife’s 2007 Jeep is on its last leg and we’re in need of a new SUV. Our kids are now 12yrs & 13yrs old which makes our SUV needs of having more room for the kids.

We’re looking at the Ford Explorer

I heard you say to go with 2018 & 2019 V6 RWD if used

BUT how about 2020-2021 used. I’m weary of the 4cyl Eco Boost as IVE HEARD YOU SAY TO STAY AWAY OF MOST 4cyl turbo charged or Eco Boost!

I told my wife we’ll be patient on buying and waiting on your response.

Thanks Scotty,

Don't.

It all depends on who took care of the vehicle.

Do you have other options on the table or do you prefer the Ford Explorer?

My wife really wants the Ford Explorer because of the leg room and luggage room, for our road trips

In a vehicle that size, the only thing making it go in a reasonable fashion is the turbocharger. If you took that thing off, it would be an absolute dog. Scotty did a video back in Houston about one with a turbo problem. Get a naturally aspirated V6 if you must have the Explorer. Less can go wrong and you're not abusing a tiny 4-banger.

I don't think they make a RWD option on the Explorer now. I'm pretty sure it shares the same platform as the outgoing Taurus full-size car, which was either AWD or FWD. The days of body-on-frame, RWD SUVs like the old Explorers are over. A comparable vehicle to that nowadays is the Bronco.

My wife really wants the 2022 Ford Explorer. So are we better off with the 2020 or 2021? May I ask why we should not buy the new 2022?

Thanks ~ Rob

I heard you mention not to buy a brand new 2022 Ford Explorer, am I better off buying a 2020 or 2021, if so, should I go V6 or stay with the V4 because they’re both with the Ecoboost?

I live in Southern California. Your advice is great appreciated.

Happy Thanksgiving ~ Rob

Check out the section on Ford in this post; there's info about the Explorer too. But in short avoid it or if you really want one then lease it and get rid of it before the warranty is over.

Realize that the "new" ones, made during and after the 2020 model year have a terrible 10 speed auto.

Hence if you must buy an explorer, your best choice is one made before or during the 2019 model year.

You're not better off.

Instead of buying a questionable car that can kinda last, you're looking at a nightmare.

Your advice

Well, scotty gave his advice on the topic.

To avoid the new ones and go with an old V6 (Ti-VCT) without the AWD system.

Scotty has also repeatedly advised getting a 4Runner or a highlander instead.

having more room

A 4Runner has better leg, hip and shoulder room.

4Runner or Highlander if the wife is open to it.

The problem with the 2020+ Explorer is it has the GM+Ford transmission. They built it in collaboration.
