mr kilmer                                      reasonly  i just bought it  2018 rav4  awd 20000miles .  for my wife           can i use     75w-90 syntheic  13$ in gear oil differential oil     .  20000 miles     instead   of oem toyota gear oil  40$   or  use       red line better   75w-85 sythetic?            better?       thx

Use whatever weight that your manual states.

Use whatever gear oil (hypoid gear oil) of the correct weight is on sale.

When in doubt, I usually just go Toyota OEM, just to make it easy on my brain.  But if you know what you are doing, you could figure out the correct gear oil and viscosity.  It is not that often you change the gear oil, so OEM isn’t that outrageously priced with that respect.

My argument in such cases has always been that as an individual and not someone who is a mechanic and needs to make profit just go with OEM. Not saying something else wouldn't be okay, but usually the price difference isn't that much to be a deal breaker. Also, sometimes dealerships have sales on parts so it can even become cheaper.
