I have a 2020 Toyota Yaris 1.5L Hatchback. (If it helps, my car was built in a Mazda plant in Mexico).
My Yaris stutters when going over short inclines when moving from a stop. When this happens, the car will start moderately shaking. When the shaking stops, the car will buck forward a little, then will drive completely normal after. This only happens when taking off from a stop on an incline. Going over hills without stopping or parking feels completely normal.
The parking lot at my college is on an incline, and when I take off from the spot, that's when this all happens.
What could be the cause of this? I've driven all kinds of small cars and have never come across this issue.
Sounds to me like an issue with the automatic transmission.
I’m assuming you have a rebadged Mazda2, with the Mazda built 6 speed automatic.
Their automatics are incredibly dependable and your symptoms sound to me like a manufacturing defect. (Maybe it’s a valve body issue or possibly a torque convertor lockup issue)
if your car has around/over 37,500 miles try replacing the ATF - but that shouldn’t happen anyway as you’d typically begin experiencing issues caused by dirty ATF only after 70k-80k miles…
but stuttering when the car is still practically brand new is unacceptable - if it’s still under warranty (which it probably still is) go to the dealer, see if you can get them to give you a new transmission or at the very least make this one work correctly.
It’s not a DCT, vibrations and stuttering are not “normal operation”.
