[Solved] 4Runner lower safety ratings

Why do 4Runners have lower crash test safety ratings by IIHS and NHTSA compared to other SUVs? I thought they are known for being solid and well built in Japan. Are these lower safety ratings a deal breaker? Thanks!

Rated lower due to results of crash tests.  Boils down to engineering compromises used in selecting crumple zones.  I wouldn't use this as a deal breaker as any vehicle in certain crashes will cause harm to passengers... depending on crash type, passenger health etc...

Thank you!

They are safe enough.

Solid and well-built are in terms of build quality and durability.  It has no bearing on the safety rating.  That being said, it is safer than 4runners from decades ago, and now the 2020+ ones have the active driver assist to help you.  I wouldn’t hesitate to get one.

Great! Thank you!

I have a 2019 Off Road and no it doesn't have the greatest frontal impact safety rating but the side impact protection is supposed to be very good. I figure if I get t-boned I will have a pretty good chance of survival.
