Hello,
Looking at a 2022 4runner, with 37K on it.
It's 4WD 5 speed with ECT. What are your thoughts on that?
Yes/No.
Thanks.
I guess the question I was wondering, this ECT, I didn't hear too much about that, and was wondering mostly about that.
I think it's nothing new. It just changes the way transmission operates when towing or hauling heavy loads to make the truck more responsive (at the expense of fuel economy)
It's the same as the "TOW/HAUL" button that GM has been putting on trucks for decades.
I've watched nearly all his 4runner YT videos. I guess the question I was wondering, this ECT, I didn't hear too much about that, and was wondering mostly about that.
I had the ECT in my 98 4Runner, it is old tech, and nothing to worry about.
The transmission in the 2022 has been around over 20 years, and considered one of the best transmissions ever made, that is why Toyota keeps using it.
Just test drive it a good while, and make sure you like how it feels. The down sides to the 5th gen are similar to the 3rd gen, like my 98. They are not the most cushy ride, they are a truck based SUV, heavily sided to off road. Not saying they are the worst ride in the world, but it isn't a Lexus. One of the reasons I got a GX470 instead of a 4Runner, I am getting older, and it rides a good bit better. Cushy over bumps. By the way, my 2008 GX has the same transmission as the 2022 4Runner.
As far as reliability in the 4Runner, everything in it has been around a while, and thoroughly tested and tweaked out. Some people actually complain because it doesn't have fancy things like auto air conditioner and heater. I swear I wish my GX had plain old AC and heater!
Unlike some other models of Toyota, the 4Runner reputation for reliability is still intact, for now.
