Vehicle has a tick on a cold start up, bolt broke on the exhaust manifold. Seems like a common issue with 5.7 hemi engines from my research. Any suggestions that would prevent this from happening again? It is a tight working space and calls for a few man hours. Would like to fix this issue for good if possible. Vehicle has 120,000 miles. I'm the 2nd owner. The car had 84,000 miles when I purchased.
I have a 2019 ram with the same engine. Id really like to know the answer too.. as long as it isnt sell it and get a toyota. Lol
Faint ticking is normal at startup, oil drains away from valvetrain after a while. Constant loud ticking is the result of wear throughout the valvetrain and failed/failing hydraulic lifters.
Trying to clamp dissimilar metals together...aluminum head and cast iron exhaust manifold is the whole problem. Way different expansion/contraction rates.
Some scrap the cast iron manifolds and install steel shorty headers and stronger bolts. Less thermal dynamics at work.
Haven't tried it, but am thinking why not drill the cast iron manifold bolt holes bigger to allow for expansion.
