63 Scout International keep it original or swap in different motor?

Hey Scotty ...I ambuying an  63 international scout 80 inline 4 single barrel carb and a "three speed " tranny meaning it have three forward gears and a reverse so 4 technically ..heres my question it's pretty rough and I don't know if I can find parts to make it run after I get it should I even bother or just drop in a more reliable and easier to find part for engine... example are a Chevy 350 V6 or jeep inline 6 I'd also love some suggestions if I swap do u have a preference in motor ....if I don't swap I was thinking about getting an intake that would support a four barrel carb but idk if that's to much or not ......note I'm comfortable in spending 20,000 over a couple years I'm not however I'm not ready to dedicate 500,000 to anything so if that gives you an idea ....

What kind of condition is the engine in? Do you want or need more power?

The Scout's 4-cylinder engine is actually one bank of the International Harvester 304 V8 which was a well-made heavy-duty engine. As far as parts availability, rockauto.com lists a lot of parts still available, probably because so many are the same as the IH V8:

Here's a video tour of a '66 Scout which has the same basic engine (though with larger displacement) and also has a 4-speed (4 forward speeds) transmission which is said to be rare. Looks like a YT channel you may be interested in:

I've really only gone through my O'Reilly looking for parts but I'll check rock auto the block is covered in dirt like I will for sure have to use a pressure washer to get that off the guy I'm buying it from says he drove it into were he parked it idk if I believe that the ignition coil was just lying on the block no battery shifter suck in first and he would have to back up to get it were it is ...I think he's lying but I'm still willing to save it if the block can be made into something cool I mostly just want to make sure 20 people didn't say " oh those are trash " but I don't really need more power besides even if I did I can't update the block I have and I think it'll do I plan to " revive " the block meaning I'm not going to add a bunch of extras I'm just going to buy the highest quality options when I buy them ..what would you do to determine the "quality" of a block pressure tester? Grab on to the harmonic balancer? See if it's free ? Do I just wait untill I get it clean? Any advice on cleaning an old block without breaking stuff? Sorry to stack so many questions you don't have to answer them all . But yea I just wanted to make sure the motor didn't have a bad rap for some major flaw

 


The main thing is if it's been sitting for a long time you'll want to make sure the engine is not locked up, you should be able to turn it by hand. Use a socket on the crankshaft pulley bolt and see if you can turn the engine. You might want to put a little oil into the cylinders first to lube things up. Not sure about cleaning, never had to do that.


I've heard a little atf or marvels mystery oil can lube it up good so if it's locked up would you say it a no go cause the cost to restore would surpass the value of a new engine?


Although I've not had to do it myself I have also heard for decades that you can free up a stuck engine by letting Marvel Mystery oil soak in the cylinders for a few days. If the only problem is piston rings stuck in the bore that could get things moving again.


I picked up some marvel's today I wanted to see what all the fuss is about anyway similar to Lucas products the people that like them really really like them there are always someone going on about marvel's or sea foam so I want to learn a little more about these additives I understand there are no "miracle in a bottle" treatment but the shop I work at wouldn't have a whole ilse for them
