For your Buick, keep it close to original parts, use OEM- original equipment manufacture- AC Delco plugs and wires.  This car originally had a carburetor and mechanical fuel pump.  For odors of gasoline, look for fuel leak at gas line connections- input to carburetor, output from pump where pressure would be highest.  Rubber fuel lines can harden and split over time. Carburetor seals and gaskets can also fail and leak.  A carbruator rebuid kit would contain those items.  The rubber diaphram in the mechanical fuel pump can crack/rupture and leak.  You have to replace the whole pump if that's the case.
