8.1 Silverado 3500?

Topic starter

Hello All,

I'm looking at buying an 05 Silverado 3500 with the 8.1 v8, 5-speed allison transmission with 160,000 miles. My ol 2500HD is getting ready to retire and I'm looking to replace it.

Is there any issues with the Vortec 8100 that I should be aware of or is the truck relatively reliable for it's year/class?

Any alternative suggestions ate very much welcomed but I'd like to keep it in the 2000-2006 year ranges of Silverado 2500 or higher. That was my late grandfathers truck (the one I have now) and I'd like to replace it with something similar that he and in enjoyed.

Thank you!

What is the price? Private party or dealership?

Dealership, they're asking about 22,000. I'm also trying to play the waiting game cause I'm sure the used car market is going to decline soon

Are you fixed on driving a gasser or would you be open to diesel? 3/4 ton I wouldn’t oppose for a gas option but when you get up to your 3500s might as well go diesel. Are you gonna tow much or work it?

I'd be open to diesel. I'm just not too sure how much different they are to work on compared to gas. Also I'm not sure what years to stay away from. From what I've gathered, the 6.6L duramax in the 06-07's was the real cream of the crop. Only problem with that is now I'm getting my search range to be really tight cause I don't see them for sale that often.

Also, as far as work, i do plan on installing my 8' fisker plow to whatever the next truck is. Up in the northeast here so I'm just trying to get some side work going in the winter time

@tpicht37 if it’s going to be a plow truck you may be alright staying with a gas. Yes the LBZ 6.6 is the only Duramax to buy in my opinion. Yes, they are unicorn trucks for sure. And if you plan on doing maintenance yourself, in your case and what you plan to use the truck for the gas option wouldn’t be bad.
