91 Lexus LS400 Reverse slow to engage & EGR Pipe Leaking

Hi Scotty,

I'm new to your forum. Last week I bought a 1991 Lexus LS400, rear wheel drive, auto trans, 4.01L with 250k miles. Hoping you'll share your wisdom RE:

1. When I put it in reverse, it won't move. So I put it in drive and move car forward a foot or so, then I put it in reverse and it will move back. This just started. I've owned the car for a week. There were zero indications of anything wrong with the car when I bought it Friday, but last Sunday the car was jumpy to start and I couldn't get it into reverse, though after a minute of messing with it I got it to go to reverse. - Can I save the transmission? Can you give me advice on how I can check the transmission fluid level myself on this 91 Lexus LS400?

2. It also has an exhaust leak - It's coming from the EGR pipe. Book says removing replacing EGR pipe is 8 hours of labor and the part is $200ish wholesale... I want to keep emissions safe for me. Is there a cheaper way? Any advice on that?

3. Also yesterday on the way to muffler shop where they gave me free estimate (they can't do the work and the guy is honest) my dash lights went out for several minutes, then on again. I was driving in light mist rain. I know this is relatively minor. Any advice on fixing this?

I look forward to your thoughts. Thank you for having this forum!

You can get the official Owner's Manual here - it should tell you how to check the trans fluid (but cross your fingers on that)

Thank you for the links.

I do not see in the manual where there is information on how to check the transmission fluid.
