[Solved] How to fix my AC?

I have a 2014 hyundai santa fe with 160,000 miles. Ac went out the other day. The clutch is not engaging. Every now and then there is a whining noise like it is trying to. There is pressure in the system so I know it is the compressor that is bad. Is there anything else I should look into when replacing this. I plan on having a local shop evacuate the system for 45 dollars.

How much pressure is in the system? Typically the low-pressure cutout will prevent the compressor from engaging below about 20 psi. You can't tell much from a static pressure reading but you can tell if there's sufficient refrigerant for the compressor to operate. You can also check that at rest pressure is the same in both high and low sides. (If not there is a blockage somewhere.)

If it's not low refrigerant if you're lucky it's the compressor clutch or an electrical problem with a sensor, relay, or fuse. If you're unlucky the compressor has seized up and the entire AC system would need to be replaced due to the debris that results when that happens.

There is pressure in the system. I only have a quick fill can so I can only check low side. The can shows over filled because the compressor is not engaging.

Those "recharge" cans are useless for diagnosis. You need to hook up a proper manifold gauge set to see what's going on. They can be had for under $35 online or some parts stores will loan them out.

However if you are not familiar with working on air conditioning you should consider taking it to a professional. It's all too easy to make matters worse.

It was the compressor. I Replaced and now it works great. When I got the freon removed from a local shop he did a quick check and said the same. I also Replaced the condenser and serpentine belt since I was in there.

Thanks for posting back with the fix.
