Are 01-06 Suburbans with the 8.1L worth buying?

I'm thinking about buying a 2500 Suburban. I know you hate GM. Well, These are before the disaster years. I need something that can tow well (stock trailer/small equipment/toys... I figure 10,000 lbs gives me plenty wiggle room). Gas mileage is entirely irrelevant. I'm well aware a 496ci engine will burn obscene amounts of fuel.

As far as I can tell, these are still the highest rated towing SUV's to this day. 10k or 12k with a weight distributing hitch. They have 4L80 or 4L85. They also used the 8100 for marine applications, so it *should* be fairly reliable.

Have you seen many of these? What's your opinion? Is there some other SUV I should check out? I'm sure you're not too shy to share. 😛

To be clear, I'm not looking for a truck. I'm looking for an SUV with enough grunt to pull the "smaller" stuff.

Well, the towing capacity of the SUV you are considering are in the 7000 lb range. I would consider Toyota Sequoia instead of the Chevy.

Right out of the owners manual says 3.73 rear end at 10,300 and the 4.10 at 12,000. I think the 7900lbs is the 6.0L

Correct.
