What do you think of the notion that new trucks are junk? Do you really think they are junky or is it just that they are more complex and harder to work on. Love to get your opinion.

The only good new trucks IMO are Tacoma and Tundra.

GM still has the AFM mess, Ford has their 5.0L oil consumption problems, and Ram has lots of issues with the infotainment center and other accessories.

I would never buy a truck made after the early 2000s, unless it was 3/4 ton HD version.  They still make those as relatively simple work vehicles, compared to the 1/2 ton embarrassments they are making today.  Tacoma and Tundra are the notable exceptions.

Trucks were originally built for the farmer or blue collar worker. They were less complex because they needed to do 2 things, tow and haul. The truck has moved off the fields and the construction sites and is now the commuter vehicle for white collar folks. Many which want the absolute most complex and tech filled truck because it’s something to show off and is a status symbol. I would say that there is a lot of good things in modern trucks but there’s more unnecessary crap than there should be.

Actually they are pretty good until their warranties expired..

Almost all new vehicles are more complex than ever before, trucks included.  But they are not all bad.  The ones that introduce new power train technology (including electronics)  without ironing out the bugs should be avoided.  The ones with true and tried platforms should be considered.  Unfortunately, when it comes to newer vehicles it’s a huge mine field:  lots more bad cars vs. good cars and each automaker including Toyota/Honda have made mid-steps.  If you plan to keep for a very long time and put hundreds of thousands of miles, very few can do that nowadays, but I’d place my hard earned money on Toyota first and foremost.  If you plan to keep just a few years under warranty and/or lease you have more options what to get, but who wants to go to the dealer for repairs even under warranty?  The more they touch your vehicle, the more the potential for them to mess something up.

Tundras are really good new trucks although the new ones are getting outdated. The early 2nd gen models are very good. Tacomas are good but aren't a really good work truck. They are too small. For the other big 3 ford, chevy, ram, all have a ton of issues whether it be death wobble or tranmissions going out after 15k miles. As for old trucks I don't know much about them so I can't say if they are better than the new ones. All I can say is that the new ones seems to just be full of problems.

The new Ram 2500 and 3500 are not bad if you get them with a Cummins diesel and an Asin transmission. The heavy-duty Chevys are not bad either but I would stay away from all new 1500 trucks except for the Toyota Tundra.

It is true, while a V8 Ford is okay, The only true exceptions are the Toyota trucks.
