Hey Scotty,
I heard Audi Etron owners are complaining about their cars not charging 100% to get the maximum amount of range. From what I have seen Audi puts a software limiter to make sure the batteries don't charge to 100% of their battery capacity. One of their EVs as an example has a 95 kWh battery pack and Audi limits the charge to 86 kWh. Can that help preserve battery longevity and is it that big of a deal?
Lithium-ion batteries last longest if only charged to about 80% of capacity. Even some laptop computers have power management software that does this to maximize battery lifetime.
smartphones too
I don’t know the specifics of the etron. But I do know that most manufacturers limit capacity intentionally. Batteries wear out over time. So they intentionally limit capacity, to “extended” the life of the battery.
So for example, 100% charge will only use 80% of the battery.
