Is My Battery Still Good?

Hello Scotty! I have a 2008 Corolla with 173k miles, and I replaced the battery in January, but my Alternator went bad this week, and I had to get it rebuilt with a local guy I've known for years. He replaced the voltage regulator, and it's been working well ever since.

I'm suspicious of whether the battery is still good since I've heard batteries usually go bad after the alternator goes out. What do you think?:

Please let me know,

Thanks!

I've heard batteries usually go bad after the alternator goes out.

also, it could have been the failing battery that took out the alternator. Anyway if it tests good and reliably starts the car every morning then why replace it?

@imperator I think it was just the alternator that was bad, because I just had the battery tested at Autozone, and they said it's at 100%. I guess I was just skeptical.

I mean the old battery you replaced in January

There's more than one variable here. How much do you drive?

My '79 Pontiac Catalina's fuel pump crapped out when the battery was around 1 year old at that time. I tried to start the car so many times that the battery died. I was in a bad area to break down. When the tow truck brought the car home, I put the battery on my car battery charger. It started just fine afterwards. If you do frequent short trips, your battery will sulfate more rapidly than if you drive for an extended duration.

You can take your car to AutoZone and have them test your car battery. They put a simulated load on the battery, if it fails or is getting weak, replace it, if not, you're fine. Given that you just replaced the battery in January, it's more than likely fine.

If you're really concerned about it and you drove frequent short trips, put the battery on a car charger, some model chargers can sense whether or not the battery some sulfation damage and it may be able to fix it.

@justin-shepherd Thanks, I actually had it tested at an Autozone, and they said it's at 100%. I guess I was just skeptical😅
