I've been searching for a Ford Ranger with under 50K miles because of their reliability and longevity. I've been really trying to stick with a standard manual transmission and a 4 cylinder engine but I found a deal that seems good enough to cave on.
It's a 2010 Ranger, no rust, 12,800 miles, 2 wheel drive, 4cyl with an Automatic transmission.(I know, crazy) It's from a dealership, the carfax shows routine maintenance was done regularly at a dealership close by. A friend's cousin worked at the close by dealership as a mechanic and remembers the truck. He vouched for it.
I'm poor. I'm cashing in a piddley savings for a truck that will last hopefully 10 years or more. I've never had a lasting car. I can't afford a Toyota and I don't want something used up. This is probably the best I'll find.
I'd follow Scotty off a cliff. He says no to automatic transmissions. Is this going to last? If the transmission goes out, is a manual swap worth doing? Is there anything I should ask to look at again before I sign papers next week? I'm pretty much convinced but terrified. The price tag means a lot more to me than it does that dealer. {black}:scared:
The old generation Ranger automatics are decent. I would take that truck to a mechanic to make sure that is actually the mileage it has been driven. If that's the real mileage, 12,800 miles is hardly broken in. My 1999 Ranger V6 4×4 went 250,000 miles on an untouched automatic transmission before it needed rebuilt. I bought it 2 years ago and had it rebuilt shortly after. The 2010 trucks have the same transmission as my '99, it has been slightly updated to a 5-speed, not a 4-speed. Take care of that transmission and do fluid changes every 30k to 60k miles and it will last a good while.
