[Solved] Torque converter shudder

Hey Scotty. Love your channel. I have a Toyota Camry 2013 with 172000 miles. I found out the car has a torque converter shudder. Toyota won't fix it under warranty because it's over 150k miles. I'm getting different advice on how to fix the shudder. One person is saying change the transmission fluid and put shudder guard in the transmission and it will get rid of issue. Another person is saying they can change the torque converter. Another is telling me to change the torque converter and transmission. What do you advise?

There is an updated version for the torque converter. It is called "Torque converter kit" which you can buy from Toyota dealers. It is cheaper that just the torque converter. But before going forward, make sure that the issue is only the converter and did not damage the other parts of the transmission.

Sell the car.

Thank you for info. Can't sell it right now. I'll need to buy another car and this is not the time to do that. Hopefully used car prices will come down soon. I always bought Toyota for reliable and now they suck. Any suggestions on other really reliable brands?

Any suggestions on other really reliable brands?

Actually Toyota is fine if you avoid models with known problems. This one is definitely not one of their finer moments. Usually Honda is the other most recommended choice but they too have problematical models to stay away from. All manufacturers do, but some bring out lemons pretty much across the board. (I won't mention Hyunai/Kia's name.) Honorable mention is generally given to late model Mazda and Subaru for decent reliability.

Personally, on the issue of "reliable brands", I'd go out on a limb and say there's no such thing as a "reliable brand" anymore.
The brand new Mazda3 has terrible electronics and some new Corolla models have a lot of transmission issues, not to even mention what's going on at Honda (Clutched CVTs, Turbo engines, Paint issues, CVT issues, Fiat transmissions,...).
I can't think of any brand that doesn't currently sell at least one flawed/unreliable model.

As far as Hyundai/Kia, Their American model lineup is weak - but sometimes they do sell conventional automatics with MPi engines without too many bells and whistles and those cars are fine if well maintained and they do tend to way cheaper (When I ordered mine, a similar sized Toyota was over 30% more and is equipped with an unproven powertrain)

Could very well be. Certainly today's vehicles are festooned with a huge amount of questionable technology that's going to wind up needing expensive repairs down the road.

Latest vehicle I've ever owned is a 1999 model so I don't have direct experience with today's cars, have to rely on Scotty and other trusted sources for that, as well as friends and family who own them.
