Scotty, my son and I disagree on a question on whether when going down long grades in the road in putting the trans mission into neutral is bad or good? To of a hill doing45_50  put tranny into neutral and coast for say 3/4 to 1 mile then engaging the tranny back in at 35-40..your thoughts.

definitely bad, and even illegal. You always want to have control over your vehicle.

If you think you are saving fuel, you are not.

As @mountainmanjoe mentioned, you have to be in control of your vehicle. You may put it in neutral at 45/50, but after that you're free-wheeling down a slope and going way faster then that, and you're just along for the ride. And you run the risk of damaging your tranny shifting into D while going 35/40. Having lived in Colorado for a spell a long time ago, and driven on plenty of steep grades. I tried that once, (when I was young, dumb, and fearless) scared the crap out of me, never did that again and don't recommend it.

Ultimately it is illegal, and also, it is hard on the brakes. If anything you should be downshifting.
