During the automotive industry in the 1990s, why did so many car companies merge such as Chrysler/Daimler, Hyundai/Kia, and Nissan/Renault?

Economics. The world keeps changing and the way people react affects the economy. Bigger companies can weather storms easier than small ones, so sometimes they will merge like that. The early nineties saw a small recession, so that usually drives changes like this.
