If the car manufacturers are really going to discontinue gas engines.

Which cars would you recommend to buy now if you wanted to be one of the last people drivinf a gasoline powered car?

Most available parts/ easiest to work on/ most reliable.

What would be the best plan to go the distance?

Thanks,

Mike

Don't hold your breath.

Nobody has come up with anything reliable that can tow.

California doesn't even have enough power to charge EVs.

Hybrids will still have gas engines.

Obviously the best generations of the RAV4, Corolla, Camry, iM and iA.

Previous generation RAV4 in most model years:

10th generation Corolla with a 1.6 / 1.8 made AFTER 2009:

XV40 generation Camry 4 cylinder made AFTER 2014:

SCION iM / Toyota Corolla iM with a 1.6 / 1.8 MANUAL, but body panels are a bit scares outside of Europe:

Scion iA / Mazda2, Any powertrain, not too easy to work on but super solid:

Suzuki Vitara with the 1.6L and 6 speed automatic transmission (NOT on the US market):

Each one of these is proven to last 150k miles quite easily with good maintenance,

So with exceptional maintenance starting at 0 miles, I think you could stretch out its life for over 200k miles and 20 years.

Toyota parts tend to be cheaper and more available than Honda. Probably because Toyota is so much bigger than Honda. I also like Toyota’s online parts ordering system better than Honda.

In terms of maintenance, Toyota seems easier because you don’t have to deal with the maintenance minder stuff from Honda.

General tidbits. Look for engines that are:

4 cylinder, timing chain, port injection, no GDI only, no turbo / no super, 87 octane gas, and 5W-30 or 0W-20 oil.

Depends on what you want; I mean sedan, truck, suv etc. If gas mileage isn't a factor I would suggest a new 4Runner. The other options mentioned here are definitely good too but my personal suggestion is a 4Runner.
