Hi,
I bought my 20077 Dodge Caravan and it came with wind speed 4 not working.
I replaced the blower motor resistor and it worked for less than 1 month, and speed 4 stopped working again, I thought the part I changed could be defective. Then I bought a new blower motor resistor and again in less than 3 weeks speed 4 stopped working. The other speeds work normally.
Any suggestions as to what could be causing speed 4 to stop working?
Thanks
Are you from the future? I sure hope the world is a better place to live in 20077!
That is usually a symptom of a bad blower motor drawing too much current.
Chuck,
Have you had this problem?
I used speed 4 almost never.
Yes, I've had that problem in the past. I take it that speed 4 is the highest speed. That actually bypasses the resistor, providing full voltage to the blower.
The resistor comes into play reducing voltage to the motor at the lower speeds. So even though it is counter-intuitive, the lowest speed is putting the most strain on the resistor and if the motor draws too much current as it gets older (14 years in this case) it will burn the resistor out.
I have also seen an issue where the connector on a blower resistor burned out due to corrosion and high resistance in the contacts. But in that case it was only the connector that was damaged. If the resistor is burning out internally it is going to be due to a bad blower motor.
Thanks.
I will check on that.
