How often should brake fluid be changed?

I own 2004 VolvoXC70 116,000 miles

Usual rule of thumb I've always heard is 3 years, but as yaser says check service intervals in your owner's manual. I use a Motive power bleeder which works great but you need to check specific procedures for ABS-equipped cars.

Brake fluid is hydroscopic. It has an affinity for absorbing moisture, that lowers the boiling point and promotes internal corrosion. Honda, for example, advises to do a bleeding every 3 years, … for Puerto Rico they recommend every year - air humidity factor. Same goes for Mazda, …

Anyway, it’s a cheap prevention of having a problem with callipers and pistons, … and it takes only, oh, … about one litre of fluid to do it.

*hygroscopic. I agree, very easy process to do every 2-3 years. Moisture in brake fluid will start to corrode brake lines and calipers.

Check your car manual for exact intervals.

Usually they do not need to be changed that often (every couple of years might be good)
