Buy 2005 Honda Accord 2.4 Auto ?

Hello again Carkillers,

I have been offered the sale of a single owner '05 Accord 4cyl auto with 85-90k miles, owned by retirees and dealer maintained since new. Price not discussed yet, perhaps 5-6k.

** My main concern is the auto transmission ** Are all of the auto transmissions suspect regardless of engine mated - 4 vs 6 cyl? The "Carcomplaints" site reports many failures.

I will ask if paperwork is available and do a Honda owner maintenance search via the VIN as well. I don't have a trusted mechanic as I'm new to the area and do my own auto maintenance (short of pulling engines). Should I avoid a Honda dealer for a used car inspection?

Thanks for your input in advance!

I wouldn't buy. Who knows where the price will go next.

TMK, it was only a problem with the V6 not the I4. At least per the recall.

I’m not a big fan of the dealer, but if they aren’t too expensive and you have no other choice. If you can quickly find an honest independent mechanic, that would be the better route.

If it was really owned by retirees, and they maintained it, it might be worth to consider.

I am open to other opinions, this is just a non-mechanics, DIYer, opinion, from what I know and experienced with owning my own Honda Accord.

Thanks to both of you for your input.

I ran the plates/vin on the car and had erroneously reported it as '05 when it is a 2006 Accord 4d with 97k miles. The online used prices are ridiculous considering the transmission gamble... I plan to decline unless it's a super-sweet deal.

Thanks again!
