Should I replace the engine?

Last November, I purchased a 2008 Cadillac CTS direct injection, which is the second car I bought myself. As a full-time mom with a low income, it took me a while to save up for it. I needed a reliable car for work and to take my kid to school. The car cost $6,500 and had 75,000 miles in good condition. After buying it, I took care of regular maintenance and replaced the air filter and oil. However, six months later, the car broke down, and I discovered it needed new engine. I had difficulty finding a trustworthy mechanic who could fix it. Now I'm debating whether to invest around $5,000 in repairs or sell it for parts and buy another car. I'm worried about being taken advantage of by dishonest mechanics, but also I’m questioning it is wordy invest more money on it and keep it. Between mechanic, car rental and what I pay for the car I already spend about $10.000. I don’t want to continue waisting money plus I don’t make to much.

A Cadillac CTS is not the ticket for reliability. I would not put a lot of money into it for a replacement engine, it's going to continue being an endless money pit.

Were you told specifically what was wrong with the engine? Might be worth getting a second opinion. You'd get a lot more for it if was running.
