Can you really run older diesels on used cooking oil?

I’ve seen people do this either in unmodded systems or after a “veggie diesel” conversion, but I’ve always been wary of how it might affect longevity and engine health. If I was going to run an older Mercedes diesel on the stuff, what should I do to make sure everything runs smoothly? Thanks!

It can definitely be done. I had a friend who used to run his old Volvo diesel on used cooking oil. (Smelled like french fries when he would drive it!) From what I remember he had to filter the cooking oil to remove impurities from it and also had to arrange heating it during cold weather. A search engine should turn up the details.
