Car dies when idling

Hello Scotty I have a 2007 VW Rabbit with a manual transmission that has 255K miles on it. Twice in the last three months when I have been idling at a stop light the vehicle just dies. The last time it did this I had the heat running through the floor vents and I could smell exhaust fumes in the cabin. Both times this has happened I turned the key to the off position and then turned it on again and it fired right up and I went on my way no problem. I don't have any codes showing up on my dashboard. Any ideas?

First, get a scan.  Next, check for exhaust leaks at the manifold and pipe to manifold connections.  Next, check for intake manifold and other assorted vacuum leaks with a smoke test or spray solvent.
