I have a 2017 Ford Flex limited with ecoboost engine, 46k miles. Since i bought it 4 yrs ago whenever i am in the mountains on a long downhill the transmission will downshift even when not using cruise control. Is this normal?

I think it's just engine braking.

It’s a good thing!

Engine brake, truck driver use engine brake when they are going downhill because brake system cannot provide enough braking force to slow the vehicle down, and braking system will be over heated if they brake frequently.

It can save both your life and your brakes, even though your small engine isn’t that powerful.
