Car jerking forward during complete stop

Hello Scotty,

My wife has a 2003 Camry LE V6 3.0 with a 5-speed transmission.  Whenever she brings her Camry to a complete stop, it feels like there is a car hitting or bumping at the rear bumper, jerking the car forward.  It is especially pronounced when she stops the Camry abruptly or hits the brake very hard during stop.

When I drove the Camry to see what was wrong, one thing I noticed is that the engine RPM will jump up about 200 to 400 RPM every time the kick occurs during stop.  If the engine RPM stays at idle speed at 600 RPM during braking, there will be no kick.  But if the car is about to come to a complete stop but the RPM momentary jumps up 800 to 1000 RPM, there will be a kick.  Also, if I put the transmission to 3rd gear, there is no kick at all when stopping no matter how hard I hit the brake.

So the question is:  is the transmission going bad, or some other thing is bad...like the speed sensor or engine control not in-sync with the transmission?
