Car under $5000

Hey there Scotty,

Im looking at buying a car on the cheap, under $5k, and I’ve got my eyes on either an 07 Toyota Camry with 160k miles on it, barely anything for a Toyota, or a 2011 Ford Escape (non eco boost) with 130k miles going for $4,400, which one would be the better choice from your point of view? I like the Toyota because I know I can depend on those, but I also like the ford because it’s newer, a little lower mileage, more space and I’ve heard these can be ok in reliability. Thanks.

Does the Camry have the 2.4L engine?

Your problem is that most people with a brain have figured out that at this price point, it's more to their advantage to donate the car to Salvation Army and take the tax write off than to go through the hassle of selling it.  Good luck to you.

how much do they pay?

The person donating can probably write off the book value of the car as a charitable donation.

Correct.

good point

In this market at that price point it's going to be tough to find anything decent unless maybe it's from someone you know willing to cut you a break.

With market conditions for new and used cars, getting something decent at $5000 retail level is going to be difficult.  Think about it, if somebody has a good car and cannot replace it on the cheap, why even sell their car?  We do detailing to car dealers and our business has dropped more than 60% because there are not new nor used cars that even dealers can even buy.  Auctions, only junk being sold there. Dealers are buying all the good cars from lease returns and corporate sales from dealers closed sales in auctions, the rest are fighting over junk.  Good luck
