Change PCV Valve ASAP?

Topic starter

2005 VW Passat 1.8T w/ 142K miles. It started acting up 2 days ago in terms of the RPM when idling and when accelerating as well as the engine sort of 'jumping' when first put in gear - thought it could've been a vacuum leak. Check engine light finally came on today, so I got the code read at Auto Zone, and the report they printed suggested starting with changing the PCV valve. If it is the PCV valve, do I have to change it ASAP/not drive until I change it, or can I still wait at least a few more days since I have to order it anyways? I only drive about a mile a day.

Thanks!

Can you post the code(s)? Thank you.

If it is the PCV valve, I would replace it ASAP and drive it only as necessary.

Try cleaning it really good and see if that helps while you are waiting for the new one.

Good ideas in above comments.  If it's a metal pcv valve, it can be cleaned with carb cleaner and reinstalled.  If it's a plastic pcv valve, it needs to be replaced with new.  If it's clogged, pressure from blow by will build up in the crank case and cause oil leaks.  Always a good idea to use a new pcv valve with each oil change.
