Hi Scotty,
I have a 2004 Toyota Tundra 4.7L V8, 4x4 with 205,000 miles. I bought it when it had 88,000 miles and I have not changed the transmission fluid since I bought it. I do not know if it was ever changed prior to my owning it. It runs strong and I have no issues with the transmission at all.
Should I change the fluid completely? Or should I replace a small amount of the fluid? I have some people telling me to change a few quarts and some people telling me not to change it at all.
I trust your knowledge to guide me on what to or not to do.
Thank you,
Marilyn
manual or automatic?
Just change whats in the pan and the filter. Drop and drain the pan. Clean it out good. Replace the filter and add new fluid back.
If the fluid is not gritty it's fine to change it. (Grit would be from severely worn friction surfaces. According to Scotty, Toyotas are not prone to that.)
Don't flush the transmission. Just drain and fill. Three drain and fill procedures, with some driving in between, will replace about 90% of the old fluid. (A large amount of fluid remains in the torque converter when draining the transmission pan.) If there's a filter that should be changed as well.
