Nothing wrong with a 2001 Suburban with 190,000 miles IF it isn't rusted out underneath, was taken care of, AND has been maintained.

It's not unusual for them to go over 300,000 miles if the previous  owner(s) changed the oil and paid  attention to the  fluid levels.

I bet if you waited a little bit you can find a decent one in the $2500 price range,

(depending on where you live.)

I'd definitely pay a mechanic to check it out for me.

If you select a good one with under 200,000 miles,

there's no reason you couldn’t get another 100,000 miles out of it.

@jack62
too many ifs. There are plenty of 'burbs out there.

It's an almost 2 decade old vehicle with high mileage for a ridiculous price. It might not even last a year.

@mountainmanjoe
so would a 2000 Dodge Caravan SE with the 4 speed automatic transmission and 124k miles for $2000 be a better buy? (i dont care about electrical problems as long as it's mechanical parts last)

No. It's even older. It's worth barely more than its scrap value.

Take your $4,000 , save up $2k or $3k more and get something less than 8 yrs old with around 100,000 mi.

@mountainmanjoe
for me it needs to be atleast 10 years old

you should be able to find an old beater on craigslist for around $500

If you really want to buy an old car, get a Japanese one.

Have you thought of 2009 or newer Nissian Xterra?  Still a conventional automatic transmission and frame on body construction.

@digidad
are the nissan quest vans any good?

Total condition counts.  If you have ability and/or money to repair when needed, then go for it.   If looking for a trouble free vehicle you should move along.  Is it a 4x4?  Which frame?  No rust or bondo'd rebuild?  Regardless, price is too high but vehicle may, or may not, be scrap.

@jimz
its not 4WD its not rusted its a 2002 and is selling for $2000 with 130k miles

Try for better price. Have mechanic check motor to see if it is about to blow. If not go for it.

@jimz
ok and whats your opinion on a 2000 dodge carvan se that looks brand new has 0 problems has ben checked out by a mechanic and is selling for 2 grand with 124k miles

I have no problem buying any car that has been checked, and passed, mechanical specs, for a reasonable price. "reasonable price" is to be determined.

@jimz
i wonder if you could pull the engine and transmission out of a chrysler van and replace it with a toyota engine and transmission
