no reverse 2005 camry 250k miles . I was advised it may be because of rough handling when removal or installation. I am able to shift in reverse with the engine off. I start and it is fine,being able to go through gears normally. Only when the engine is running it will not go in revrse.

Maybe check for excessive free play of the clutch pedal.
You may not be getting full travel of the clutch master cylinder piston.

It will go in reverse only with the engine off.

Are you able to put the shifter in the Reverse position or does it simply not enter?
